The Indonesian Internet Domain Name Registry (PANDI) successfully organized .IDFEST 2025 from September 15–17, 2025, in Jakarta. This event brought together various public figures from diverse fields who play significant roles in the development of the digital world, both in Indonesia and globally. Mr. E.L. Sajogo, S.H., MCIArb., Managing Partner of MS&A Law Firm, was not only invited to attend but also gave a presentation during the New gTLD Seminar at .IDFEST 2025 on September 16, 2025.
The seminar also featured several prominent figures, including Athena Foo from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), Alban Kwan from Commonwealth Superannuation Corporation (CSC) Melbourne, Mr. I Gusti Ngurah Puspa Adiana, representing the Provincial Government of Bali, and Mr. Shidiq Purnama from PANDI. Each of these public figures comes from different professional backgrounds and areas of specialization but collaborated to help shape a strong digital ecosystem for the world.
As an advocate and intellectual property consultant, Mr. E.L. Sajogo, S.H., MCIArb., explained the relevance between domain names and intellectual property, particularly in relation to trademarks. Trademark ownership protects intellectual property assets in the physical world, whereas domain name ownership safeguards one's presence in the digital world—something crucial for business players. Therefore, it is essential for businesses that own trademarks to also ensure their presence in the digital space by owning domain names.
Furthermore, in 2026, the registration for New Generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) will be open for only about 12 to 15 weeks. In this context, the public needs to pay attention to gTLDs in the form of .brand (dot brand). Owning a .brand domain for a business guarantees full protection in the digital space. An analogy presented by Alban Kwan and Athena Foo in their presentations compared owning a .brand to owning an entire building rather than merely renting space.
.IDFEST 2025 highlighted that to build a safe and robust digital world, collaboration among various sectors and professions is essential. The public must play an active role in understanding and spreading awareness to keep up with ongoing developments in this digital era.
